A group of local stakeholders have joined forces to avoid Christmas being ‘cancelled’ in Torquay. The group, made up of Torbay Chamber of Trade, Torbay Displays, Council representatives and local retailers from the likes of Primark, Fleet Walk and Union Square shopping centres are currently meeting weekly, to develop plans to raise funds so that they can deliver town wide Christmas decorations and festivities.
Susie Colley Chairman of the group and Torquay Chamber of Trade said, “A Business Improvement District or Town Centre Management Team would usually organise Christmas decorations but without this support network in place in Torquay, we have been told by the Mayor that there really is no budget or organising committee to facilitate projects or activities that people come to expect from their town.
We are working with the council to generate income at the moment to avoid us being left with nothing.
Richard Randle-Jones, Centre Manager of Union Square Shopping Centre said “Christmas decorations and festive celebrations really do a lot to create a positive atmosphere for our community and visitors to Torquay. With this in mind, a number of our local stakeholders agreed that we must take on this responsibility to avoid losing more visitors to our neighbouring towns during this key seasonal period and we hope we will have the towns support in doing so.
